Twenty Days
Documenting Pierre Nagley's last mural in Yellow Springs before he headed back to Kyoto.
Last year I was fortunate enough to have a local artist, who is not so local anymore, allow me to document him while he worked on a new mural. Pierre Nagley was heading back to Kyoto and his time here visiting friends and family was coming to an end. He had just 20 days to complete the mural.
I have admired his work throughout the village for years, and you'll see some of his other murals below the photo story. When I saw a post that he was beginning a new mural, I reached out and explained who I was and what I wanted to do.
Which is to say, one of my favorite things to do is document the process, be that a painter, a musician, a chef, a designer, really anyone who is doing their thing. That's when the authenticity comes through. Once they're in their flow, in their process, and start to ignore me being there, that's when I get the best shots.
A quick intro from Pierre before the photos...
Last year while I was in Yellow Springs, Ohio, I painted a mural with the support of many local villagers.
The theme of the mural was faces of immigrants and symbols from their culture that they would carry with them as protection and guidance on their journey.
It’s a large wall and I had about 20 days to paint the entire thing before returning to Kyoto. What a whirlwind of planning, gathering supplies, sketching and painting. Not much time for revisions and second guessing. I think it turned out well.
