In June, I once again got on the big jet plane and headed to Italy. After such a transformative experience last year I was excited and a bit nervous to return. What would come of this years experience?
A month later I am still thinking about the trip and the conversations that were had. About half of the people were new this year and the other half were veterans from last year. The new attendees taught me so much and I am grateful for those conversations, and the veterans gave me a reality check. One of those checks was simply this:
It seems like you are asking for permission, why?
Stop asking and just go and do it.
It was blunt, but it was what I needed to hear. It wasn’t the first time I was told this in some manner over the years. It is an odd thing, I knew I had the skill and knowledge to do what was needed but there was something holding me back. I determined it was fear, fear of the unknown, fear of being self-reliant, fear of getting out of my comfort zone.
Then, the night after I was back home and reflecting on the fear of making changes my phone lit up. It was an alert for a sale of one of my most popular photos, Foggy Yellow Springs. Bill Engvall’s voice popped into my head and said “Here’s your sign”. OK, got it - let’s do this I thought.
So I have started the process of sunsetting my career in Technology and put together my new website for prints and services. While I am still offering my prints for sale the selections will be smaller and changing more often.
I will be self-fulfilling prints using 100% pigment ink on some amazing papers that I have selected based on what is best for the photograph. The sizes too will be limited but I will have an option for larger sizes on a special order basis.
Additionally, I have collapsed my other brand that consisted of Aerial and Event Photography into Karl Yost Photography, one place for everything now. As part of this you will see some new items popping up on social media and in the newsletter showcasing these from time to time.
I am excited for this new journey and to be sharing it with all of you!
